There are times in life, even outside of aviation, where interpolation is necessary. So what is it?
Interpolation is a mathematical process of calculating approximate values using known values. It is a little bit of algebra, but don’t worry, we are about to make it simple.
First, here is a good video to help you understand (the long way) how to interpolate using an example of calculating your required distances for an aircraft’s takeoff and landing roll. Remember, these calculations are particular to the aircraft and it’s particulars including weight and flight conditions. ALWAYS make these calculations for YOUR aircraft and conditions.
It is important to know the long way because you need to know what goes into making a correct calculation. Now that you have the background info, lets talk about using an interpolation formula.
This formula calculates the same information but in an abbreviated format that can get you numbers faster.
